This gig was truly 'Legendary', and lived up in every way to our overall title of the Legends Return. I'm personally never going to forget the visit of the most excellent Mosquito-B, and the wonderful contribution they made to the success of this show.
Right from the start we knew it was going to be a great night, even the soundcheck turned out to be a pre-performance performance as Mosquito-B played the Korgis hit, 'Everyones Got to Learn Sometime', not realising that they were in the presence of their influential heroes. At the back of the hall, Stackridge applauded and shouted out that they had to put the song in their set!
From the moment Mosquito-B hit the stage, the magic of the night started to flow. This band is heart and soul rock 'n' roll, and to hear this totally British sound coming out of these three French Canadians blew the room away, everyone swarmed out of the bar area to be part of the magic. And what a variety, everyhing from brilliant covers to songs from their very own 'Killing Mars' album. They over-ran their alloted time by 15 minutes, but no one wanted to stop them, and ending the show with Frank Sinatra, and 'Video Killed the Radio Star', I tell you, Mosquito-B is going to be ringing in my ears for a long time to come. When 'Killing Mars' is released, I'm buying it, even if I have to go to Canada to collect it myself!
Was only a short interval before the mighty Stackridge powered up the audience to the next level, in a room already high on energy. If any band could claim to be Legends of Rock, it's Stackridge, an eight peice band performing songs from every stage of their prodigious songbook, including one song they hadn't featured since 1969, and work from their new album 'A Victory for Common Sense', sounding as fresh and enthusiastic as they were then. These guys do not rest on their laurels, and performing to an audience of die-hard Stackridge fans, they proved that their sound never dates, and rock music performed as superlatively as this can live forever.
Must have been near 11.45 before the music stopped, and the audience was still hanging around chatting with the bands after 12.30.
Thanks of course to the Woodmead team who had a busy night behind the bar!
Next up is Larry Miller and his Sensational Rock Blues Band on Saturday 15th May. Larry is an expert at winding up an audience, and besides being among the top guitar players in the UK, is a born entertainer.
Legendary nights of pure rock 'n' roll at its best, can't be beat, and we are laready making plans for Mosquito-B to return on a much bigger tour later this year, so, against the odds, you might get to see this fabulous French Canadian band again, so there you go Dan, you're a hit already in the UK, you gotta get over your fear of flying!
